Apita Piboni Giizis: elder years, winter, cedar, north

Medicine Wheel Art Project

For countless generations, First Nations communities have used the Medicine Wheel to promote health and healing. The Medicine Wheel represents many teachings, including the four directions, the four medicines, the four seasons, and the four life stages.

After receiving traditional teachings from Elder Ira Johnson, dozens of Indigenous youth from Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School collaborated to create these four panels. Each one was crafted using hundreds of hand-designed, cut, layered, and spray-painted stencils over the course of many months.

Elder Years • Winter • Cedar • North

Celebrating the wisdom of our elders, this panel is grounded in the quiet strength of winter. The imagery of cedar, snowflakes, and warm traditions reflects the protection and teachings passed down.
