- Businesses are frequently the targets of crime and on the front line dealing with societal problems in the area; what steps do you think should be taken to ensure businesses are protected and our community is safer to explore, shop, work and play in.
Having a regular police presence in the business district would go a long way in reducing crime. Community police stations should be placed throughout the city, particularly in high crime areas, to deter criminal activity. I’m sure the Fort William Business District could find space to house two police officers and a small office. It would comfort the community knowing police officers are patrolling in their district.
A second option would be to install close circuit cameras throughout the business district. Some may think this option is too expensive, however this option has been used very successfully in Asia and Europe.
- What is your impression of the Fort William Business community? What is one thing that is done well and what is one thing that needs to improve?
The first impression is the age of the buildings in the district. Many need renovations, while some are in complete disrepair. We’ve seen a slight change in the number and types of businesses located in the district. It will attract new customers and new businesses. The district needs to change the business environment to attract new businesses and people.
- With the revitalization of downtown Fort William project underway there is no planned community center for the area after the project is completed. Victoriaville provided an important and safe gathering place. What vision do you have to recreate a similar environment for community connectivity?
Firstly, I oppose the demolition of Victoriaville. The Fort William First Nation wants to retain Chippewa parkland as part of their traditional territory. The rides could be relocated inside Victoriaville Mall. A community center can be developed as part of the mall renovations. It would attract young families and new businesses to the area.
